En route to the Waste and Energy Company, the tour bus will take you through the Port of Amsterdam. More specifically, you will visit various sustainability projects in the port area and will hear information from a port expert on the port’s “green policy.” Among the examples to be shown are innovative, sustainable logistics systems including the Amsbarge logistics concept (which uses inland waterways to ease road congestion) and the Waterland general-cargo terminal (a covered facility that drastically reduces the need for packaging materials).

Creating value from waste – discover how we turn waste into sustainable energy and new materials

The city-run Waste and Energy Company – known in Dutch as the Afval Energie Bedrijf (AEB) – not only processes waste, but also produces electricity, heat, metals and building materials. All these operations take place in a sustainable fashion, of course.

We want to be the best in processing waste materials, with a focus upon generating the maximum benefit from them. That means the highest possible environmental yield from waste flows at the lowest possible cost, creating added value for all our stakeholders. All achieved in a mutually supportive, people-friendly and results-oriented working environment. In short, we make the most of waste.

To put our mission into practice, the Waste and Energy Company intends to deliver the best environmental performance in Europe. We want to be the European cost-price leader, charging consumers the lowest possible prices. Because we also aim to offer the highest quality, we are making every effort to create a professional organisation with highly motivated staff.

AEB wants to get more from less. New and better materials from waste. Closer partnerships with suppliers and customers, with scientists and recycling firms. One important project is Eco-Port®, a sustainable industrial park in which our new Waste Fired Power Plant forms the lynchpin for a growing number of collaborating, ecologically sound enterprises.

The Waste Fired Power Plant (WFPP) is set to raise our waste-processing capacity from 900,000 tonnes a year now to 1.5 million tonnes in 2007. And the plant increases the efficiency of power generation from waste from 22% to 30%. Giving Amsterdam more sustainable energy from the same amount of waste, and thus keeping processing charges low.

Safety rules

For your own safety during the guided tour, we require that you wear clothing that covers your arms and legs. Moreover, please put on suitable footwear (no high-heeled shoes); you will be walking on metal grate-floors. Also keep in mind that these grate floors can create problems for visitors having fear of heights. Mobile phones and other communication equipment are not permitted in our plant. Please leave these at the reception desk on arrival.
