From the project record
The results of a Structured Feedback Process (SFP) engaging nearly 500 people worldwide in 2003-2004 revealed that reporting organizations and report users wanted to see the following additions, improvements, or innovations to the GRI Guidelines broadly speaking:
- Clarity and Purpose of Indicators
Basic SFP recommendations: Review the performance indicators and improve their quality, clarity, and assurability. Adjust the indicators so that reported information based on them will allow for greater comparability while still effectively communicating organizational performance. A supporting technical protocol should be developed for each indicator. - Reporting as a Process
Basic SFP recommendations: Clarify the process of creating a sustainability report, including the use of stakeholder engagement. Show how the GRI reporting principles can be applied to help guide the reporting organization through decisions around the creation of their report and use of the GRI indicators.
In direct response to these main challenges GRI designed a research and development process for the Guidelines that involved practitioners from multiple stakeholder groups. The G3 Draft represents the results of their work, completed over 2005.
